Gadgets and Gizmos – Vitamix

One of my absolute favorite gadgets is my Vitamix Blender.  This blender is super powerful, highly rated by consumer reports and a favorite of thousands, probably millions of users. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it!

WHY A VITAMIX?

A Vitamix is not just any old blender. How many times have you tried to make a smoothie or blend a bunch of frozen fruits in a blender and it stops blending, smells like the motor is burning and makes a horrible sound all while NOT blending your food?  Yeah, that happened to me all the time with my old blenders.

A Vitamix blender can blend anything – I mean anything! While I have never tried it (and I never will), I bet you could make sawdust using this blender.  Of course, that would be silly to blend wood, but I have no doubt this powerful appliance could do it.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A VITAMIX?

You can do all sorts of things with this blender. It doesn’t just make smoothies, it can make hot soup, flour, pizza crust, creamy desserts, frozen desserts, hummus, nut butters, sauces, and even bread.  The possibilities are unlimited. Their bread recipe is so easy, every time I make it I wonder (again) why I don’t bake this recipe more often!

SPEED CONTROL

With a Vitamix, you have a lot of control over the speed you’re using to blend. My blender has 10 variable speeds which are controlled with a dial and then there is a high and I mean HIGH speed!  The blades spin so fast that you can actually cook soup in the blender without ever having to turn on your stove.

TAMPER

One of the handy items you get with a Vitamix is a ‘tamper’ which helps you push food items down into the blades while the blender is running. You just remove the top portion of the blender lid and put the tamper inside to shove the food down into any air pockets that have formed. The tamper has a wide round brim at the top which prevents you from putting it too far into the blender to keep it away from the blades.  It’s nice to be able to continue blending without having to stop to scrape all the time.

CLEAN-UP

What’s really cool – it’s self-cleaning! After you finish blending, you just fill the container ½ way will hot water and a couple drops of dish soap. Then you blend on the highest speed for a minute or so and it’s clean!

VITAMIX IS PRICEY

Yikes – yes, it really is $350 and up for a Vitamix. They are definitely pricey little machines, but you will never regret saving your money to buy one of these blenders.  My daughter found one on sale at Costco a while back and Vitamix also sells refurbished blenders at lower prices.  Maybe you will get one for your birthday?  😊

They are really heavy duty and last for a long time. So, in the long run, you can buy one Vitamix blender which will last for years and years or you can buy a less durable blender, keep replacing it and eventually spend more. And all the while, you’re dealing with the frustrating, cheaper choice.

CONSUMER REPORTS LIKES VITAMIX!

According to Consumer Reports, “Our findings show that Vitamix is the brand least likely to encounter problems by the fourth year of ownership.” I’ve had mine for just about 7 years and haven’t had one problem. But, don’t take my word for it – here’s a review from Consumer Reports.

CONS?

Truthfully, the only real negative issue I have with my Vitamix is that unlike other blenders I have owned, the blade mechanism on the bottom of the container is not removable. So, getting thicker foods out is tricky and you really need a small, rubber spatula to help scrape the bowl.  When cleaning the blender after creating those same type of foods, I sometimes I have to do more than blend water with dish soap to get it completely clean.  But, considering all the positive reasons to own one, it’s not too much trouble dealing with those two small things.

MAYBE VITAMIX SHOULD HIRE ME?

Maybe I should contact the company to see if they want to hire me to sell their blenders?! 😉 Nah…I’m not a good sales person. I just know which gadgets and gizmos I love and use the most.  Vitamix is one of the favorites in my kitchen! This gadget has made my plant-based lifestyle a whole lot easier. I don’t know how to cook without it anymore.
